This title usually brings to mind Rimsky-Korsakovs opera of the same name, but Tchaikovskys 1873 incidental music for Alexander Ostrovskys play Snegurochka deserves recognition. Replete with beautiful tunes--some by Tchaikovsky and others adapted by him from Russian folk sources--this is a welcome addition for those with a fondness for Russian opera. This Naxos recording offers hearty, knowledgeable singing and playing from the Moscow Capella and Moscow Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Igor Golovchin. Both mezzo- soprano Elena Okolysheva and tenor Arkady Mishenkin have the characteristic back-of-the-throat Slavic production while his sound is a bit too tight for comfort, shes a pleasure to hear in this repertoire. --Sarah Bryan Miller
